Bricks remain the main building material for Ugandan homes. There are two main options for entrepreneurs.
Burnt clay bricks
Traditional and widely accepted. They need clay soil, moulding, drying and firing with wood, which raises environmental concerns and fuel costs.
Interlocking stabilised soil bricks (ISSB)
Made with soil mixed with a little cement, compressed in a machine and cured without firing. They save mortar and wood, and walls rise faster.
Requirements
- Good soil and soil testing
- Moulds or a press machine
- Labour and drying space
- Compliance with environmental rules on land use and wetlands
Markets
Sell to builders, developers, contractors and individuals. Offer delivery and construction training to promote ISSB.
