Cervical cancer is largely caused by long lasting infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). It is preventable and treatable when caught early.
Screening
Visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), Pap smears and HPV tests detect changes before cancer develops. Women should screen regularly as advised, especially from age 25 to 49.
HPV vaccine
Uganda vaccinates girls through the national immunisation programme. The vaccine is safe and effective.
Symptoms
Bleeding after sex or between periods, unusual discharge and pelvic pain need prompt checks.
