Few days in a Ugandan family's year are as nerve-racking as the day UNEB results come out. Parents, candidates and teachers wait by their phones, and within minutes of the official release, thousands of SMS requests go out across the country.
Knowing exactly how to check results, what the grades mean and what to do next saves a lot of stress. This guide explains how to check PLE, UCE and UACE results by SMS and online, how to read them, the next steps after each exam and what to do if you believe a result is wrong.
When are UNEB results released?
The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) sets and marks the national exams: the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) in P7, the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) in S4 and the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) in S6. Exams are written towards the end of the year, and results come out early the following year.
For the 2025 exams, UNEB released PLE results on 30 January 2026, UCE results on 13 February 2026 and UACE results on 13 March 2026. Results for the 2026 exams are expected in a similar window in early 2027, but always wait for UNEB's official announcement of the date.
How to check UNEB results by SMS
SMS is the fastest way to get results on release day, and it works on any phone. You need the candidate's full index number exactly as it appears on the registration slip.
- Open your SMS app on an MTN or Airtel line.
- Type the exam name, a space, then the full index number:
- PLE: PLE [space] full index number
- UCE: UCE [space] full index number
- UACE: UACE [space] full index number
- Send it to 6600.
- Wait for the reply with the candidate's results.
At the time of writing, each SMS costs about UGX 500, so make sure you have enough airtime. UNEB confirms the short code and charges when it announces results, so check its official notice in case anything changes.
Tips: type the index number carefully, including any slash or zeros. If the network is busy, wait a few minutes and try again rather than sending the same message many times and paying for each one.
How to check results online
UNEB also publishes results through its online results portal, which you can reach from the official website at uneb.ac.ug. Enter the full index number to view the results. The portal is often slow in the first hours after release because of heavy traffic, so be patient.
Be careful with websites and social media pages that claim to sell or "leak" results, or ask for payment to show them. Use only UNEB's official channels and your school.
Getting results from the school
Schools collect official results from UNEB after the release and display or hand them to candidates. The SMS and online results are for quick information. The official result slip from the school, and later the certificate, are the documents you will need for admissions and jobs. If you lose a certificate, UNEB has a separate process for replacements and verification.
How to read the results
PLE
Candidates are graded in four subjects, and each subject gets a score from 1 (distinction) to 9 (failure). These add up to an aggregate, where 4 is the best possible. The aggregate determines the division, with Division 1 the highest.
UCE under the new curriculum
UCE results now follow the competency-based lower secondary curriculum. Instead of the old divisions, each subject is graded from A (exceptional) to E (elementary). Candidates also get an overall result: Result 1 means they qualify for the UCE certificate, Result 2 means they did not qualify, for example because of missing requirements, and Result 3 means they scored E in all subjects.
UACE
Principal subjects are graded A to E as passes, O as a subsidiary pass and F as a fail. Subsidiary subjects are graded separately. Universities convert these grades into points to decide admission.
What to do next after each exam
After PLE
- Discuss secondary school choices early, considering performance, fees, location and whether day or boarding suits your child.
- Follow the national Senior One selection exercise and your chosen schools' admission notices.
- Budget for admission requirements as well as fees.
After UCE
- Choose a combination for Senior Five that fits the student's strengths and future career, not just what friends are choosing.
- Follow the Senior Five selection process and school admission dates.
- Consider technical and vocational institutions and certificate courses, which lead to good careers too.
After UACE
- Apply to universities and other tertiary institutions through their official admission portals and notices.
- Check the government sponsorship lists, which include merit and district quota schemes.
- Look into the government student loan scheme, now run by the Higher Education Students Financing Secretariat under the Ministry of Education and Sports.
- Consider diploma courses, which can be a route into degree programmes later.
What if you think a result is wrong?
Sometimes a result looks very different from what a candidate expected, or is missing altogether. Here is what to do:
- Talk to the head teacher first. Schools deal with UNEB directly and can confirm whether there was a registration or data error.
- Ask about re-marking or verification. Requests to UNEB are generally made through the school, in writing, and within a limited time after results are released. A fee may apply. Ask your school or UNEB for the current procedure, deadline and cost, as these are set by UNEB and can change.
- Withheld results: UNEB sometimes withholds results while it investigates suspected exam malpractice or other irregularities. The school will usually be informed and candidates may be invited to appear before UNEB.
- Missing results: if a candidate was absent for a paper or there was a registration problem, results may be incomplete. The school can follow up with UNEB.
Keep calm and keep copies of everything: the registration slip, correspondence and any receipts.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Typing the index number wrongly or leaving out zeros
- Sending the SMS before UNEB has officially released results
- Paying websites or people who promise early or "upgraded" results
- Sharing the candidate's index number publicly on social media
- Choosing a Senior Five combination or university course in a rush
- Missing admission deadlines while waiting for re-marking
