Consumer Rights in Uganda: What to Do When You Are Sold Faulty Goods

Counterfeit electronics, expired food and substandard building materials cost Ugandan consumers money and sometimes their safety. Here is how to protect yourself.

Your basic rights as a consumer

  • Goods should be of acceptable quality and fit for their purpose
  • Goods should match their description
  • Accurate information on price, quantity and expiry
  • Safety from dangerous products

Before you buy

  • Buy from reputable sellers
  • Check UNBS quality marks where applicable
  • Check expiry dates and seals
  • Always get a receipt and warranty card

If you are sold faulty goods

  1. Return to the seller quickly with the receipt and explain the problem.
  2. Ask for a repair, replacement or refund.
  3. If refused, write a formal complaint with dates and evidence.
  4. Report substandard products to the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS).
  5. Consider the small claims procedure for unpaid refunds.
