Copyright Protection in Uganda: A Guide for Musicians, Writers and Creatives

Uganda's creative economy is growing fast: music, film, photography, fashion, writing and software. Copyright law protects creators so they can earn from their work.

What copyright protects

  • Music, lyrics and sound recordings
  • Books and articles
  • Photographs, paintings and designs
  • Films and videos
  • Software code

It protects the expression of ideas, not the ideas themselves.

Do I need to register?

Copyright exists automatically once a work is created in a fixed form. However, registering with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) gives strong evidence of ownership and makes enforcement easier.

Licensing and royalties

You can license your work to broadcasters, brands and platforms. Collective management organisations help collect royalties for public performance and broadcasting.

Protect yourself

  • Keep original files and drafts with dates
  • Use written contracts with producers, clients and collaborators
  • Clarify who owns commissioned work
  • Register works with URSB

Infringement

If someone uses your work without permission, collect evidence, send a cease and desist letter through a lawyer and consider court action.
