Uganda produces billions of litres of milk a year and is now a net exporter of dairy products. Whether you have a few acres in Mbarara or a plot in Wakiso, dairy farming can provide daily income. Here is a beginner's roadmap.
Choose the right breed
- Friesian (Holstein): the highest milk producer, but needs good feeding and care.
- Jersey: smaller, efficient and produces milk with high butterfat.
- Ayrshire and Guernsey: good producers with fair hardiness.
- Crossbreeds with Ankole or Zebu: hardier, lower yield, good for beginners.
Zero grazing vs free range
Zero grazing means cows stay in a unit and you bring feed to them. It suits small land, reduces tick diseases and increases milk. Free range or paddock grazing suits larger farms in the cattle corridor. Many farmers combine both.
Feeding for milk
- Napier (elephant) grass, Brachiaria and Chloris gayana as main fodder
- Legumes like Lablab and Desmodium for protein
- Dairy meal, maize bran and mineral licks, especially for milking cows
- Silage and hay to beat the dry season
- Plenty of clean water, a cow can drink over 60 litres a day
Health
Ticks carry East Coast Fever and other diseases, so spray or dip regularly. Vaccinate against foot and mouth disease, lumpy skin disease and brucellosis as your vet advises. Watch for mastitis by keeping milking hygienic.
Milk hygiene and selling
Use stainless steel or aluminium milk cans, wash hands and udders, and cool milk quickly. Sell to milk collection centres, cooperatives, processors, schools, hotels or directly to households. Register with the Dairy Development Authority (DDA) if you plan to process or sell packaged milk.
Value addition
Yoghurt, ghee and cheese earn more per litre than raw milk. Start small, get DDA and UNBS guidance and build a local brand.
