Early Signs of Diabetes and How to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes happens when blood sugar stays too high because the body cannot make or use insulin properly. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, is rising fast in Uganda and across Africa, often going undiagnosed for years.

Early warning signs

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Excessive thirst
  • Feeling tired all the time
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow healing wounds
  • Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
  • Frequent infections

Who is at risk?

  • People over 40
  • Overweight, especially with a large waist
  • Family history of diabetes
  • Physically inactive lifestyle
  • History of diabetes in pregnancy
  • High blood pressure

Testing

Simple tests include fasting blood sugar, random blood sugar and HbA1c. Many health centres and pharmacies offer screening. If you have risk factors, test at least once a year.

Prevention tips

  • Reduce sugary drinks, sodas and juices with added sugar
  • Fill half your plate with vegetables
  • Choose whole grains and legumes
  • Watch portion sizes of matooke, posho, rice and chapati
  • Exercise at least 150 minutes per week
  • Maintain a healthy weight

Living with diabetes

Diabetes can be managed well with diet, activity, medication and regular check ups. Early diagnosis prevents complications.
