Goat Farming in Uganda: Breeds, Housing, Feeding and Profit Guide

Goat farming is one of the most rewarding livestock businesses in Uganda. Goats need less land and capital than cattle, they multiply quickly, and demand for goat meat in Kampala, South Sudan, DR Congo and the Middle East remains strong. Here is how to start.

Best goat breeds in Uganda

  • Boer: a South African meat breed that grows fast and fetches high prices. Ideal for crossbreeding.
  • Mubende: a hardy local breed, resistant to disease and good for beginners.
  • Kigezi: adapted to cooler highland areas in south western Uganda.
  • Small East African goat: found countrywide, low cost and tough.
  • Saanen and Toggenburg: dairy breeds for goat milk production.

Many profitable farmers cross a Boer buck with local does to get fast growing kids that are still hardy.

Housing

Build a raised slatted floor house about one metre above the ground. It keeps goats dry, reduces worms and makes cleaning easy. Allow roughly one and a half square metres per adult goat, provide good ventilation and keep separate sections for kids, does and the buck.

Feeding

  • Goats are browsers. Grow Calliandra, Leucaena, Gliricidia and elephant grass.
  • Supplement with maize bran, cotton seed cake and mineral licks.
  • Provide clean water every day.
  • Zero grazing works well on small plots; free range works where land is available.

Health and disease control

Common problems include worms, mange, foot rot, pneumonia, CCPP and Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR). Deworm regularly, spray against ticks, vaccinate as advised by a vet and quarantine new animals for two weeks.

Breeding

Does can kid twice in about 18 months and twins are common. One healthy buck can serve around 25 to 30 does. Replace or rotate bucks to avoid inbreeding.

Markets and profit

Sell to butcheries, restaurants, livestock markets, festive buyers around Christmas and Eid, exporters and other farmers who want breeding stock. Pure and cross Boer breeding stock sells at a premium. Keep simple records of births, sales and costs so you know your true profit.
