Hass Avocado Farming in Uganda: The Export Opportunity Explained

Global demand for avocados keeps rising, and Uganda's climate is well suited to the Hass variety favoured by Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Many farmers are planting Hass as a long term investment.

Why Hass?

  • Thick skin that travels well for export
  • Creamy taste preferred by international buyers
  • Longer shelf life than many local varieties

Where it grows best

Hass does well in areas with good rainfall and moderate temperatures, roughly 1,000 to 2,000 metres above sea level. Parts of central, western, south western and eastern Uganda are suitable. Good drainage is essential because avocado roots rot in waterlogged soil.

Seedlings and planting

Buy grafted seedlings from certified nurseries. Grafted trees fruit in about three years, while seed grown trees can take much longer and may not be true to type. Dig large holes, mix topsoil with manure and space trees about 7 to 8 metres apart.

Care

  • Mulch and water young trees during dry spells
  • Prune to keep trees low and easy to harvest
  • Interplant beans or vegetables in early years for income
  • Plant other varieties nearby for better pollination

Export standards

Exporters look for consistent size, clean skin and correct dry matter content. Work with an exporter early, keep spray records and ask about certifications such as GlobalG.A.P.
