High blood pressure (hypertension) is one of the most common health problems among adults in Uganda, and many people do not know they have it. Left untreated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack and kidney disease.
Why it is called the silent killer
Most people with high blood pressure feel fine. Headaches, dizziness or blurred vision may appear only when pressure is very high. The only way to know is to measure it.
Understanding the numbers
- Normal: below 120/80 mmHg
- Elevated: 120 to 129 systolic
- High: 130/80 or above on repeated readings, depending on the guideline your doctor uses
- A reading of 180/120 or higher is an emergency
Risk factors
- Too much salt
- Being overweight
- Lack of physical activity
- Alcohol and smoking
- Stress
- Family history and age
Local foods that help
- Greens: dodo (amaranth), nakati, sukuma wiki
- Fruits: bananas, avocados, pawpaw, oranges
- Beans, peas and groundnuts in moderation
- Millet, sorghum and sweet potatoes
- Fish instead of fatty meat
Cut back on salt, salty snacks, processed meats and stock cubes.
Lifestyle changes
Walk at least 30 minutes most days, limit alcohol, stop smoking and sleep well. If your doctor prescribes medication, take it every day even when you feel fine.
