How to Apply for a Uganda ePassport Online: Requirements and Process

Whether you are travelling for work, study, business, medical treatment or to visit family, a Ugandan passport is your first step. Since Uganda moved to the East African ePassport, applications start online through the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC), under the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The process is simpler than it used to be, but small mistakes still cause long delays.

This guide explains how to apply for a Uganda passport online, the documents you are likely to need, how payment and biometrics work, and practical tips to get your passport without unnecessary trips. Requirements and fees are set by DCIC and can change, so always confirm the latest details on the official immigration portal before you apply.

Types of Ugandan passports

  • Ordinary passport: for citizens travelling for personal, business or study purposes. This is the one most people need.
  • Official passport: for government officials on official duty.
  • Diplomatic passport: for diplomats and specified senior officials.

Ordinary passports come in different validity periods and page counts, with different fees. Frequent travellers usually choose the option with more pages.

Who can apply?

Any Ugandan citizen can apply for an ordinary passport. Children also need their own passports and apply through a parent or guardian. Ugandans abroad can apply through Uganda's missions or the online system, depending on current arrangements.

Documents you will typically need

Requirements depend on whether this is a first application, a renewal or a replacement, and on the applicant's age. Commonly requested documents include:

  • National ID card or National Identification Number (NIN)
  • Birth certificate or other proof of citizenship, especially for first time applicants
  • Recent passport photos meeting the stated specifications, if requested
  • A recommendation letter, together with a copy of the recommender's National ID
  • Parents' National IDs and consent for children's applications
  • The old passport for renewals
  • A police letter for lost passports

The online form tells you exactly which documents apply to your case. Scan them clearly before you start.

Step by step: applying for a Uganda passport online

1. Open the official immigration portal

Go to the DCIC Passport Portal at passports.go.ug, accept the terms and answer the security questions. Be careful with links on social media. Only use the official government site, and never pay "agents" who promise faster processing.

2. Complete the application form

Choose the passport type and validity, then fill in your personal details exactly as they appear on your National ID. Mismatched names are one of the most common reasons applications are delayed.

3. Upload documents

Attach clear scans of each required document. Blurry scans or missing pages lead to queries.

4. Print the payment advice and pay

The system generates a payment advice form. Pay at a designated bank using the reference on the form and keep the receipt. At the time of writing, DCIC lists the ordinary passport fee as UGX 250,000, with express processing available for an additional UGX 150,000 paid separately. Confirm the current fees on the portal before paying.

5. Schedule your appointment

Book your enrolment appointment through the portal and print the appointment form.

6. Attend your biometrics appointment

You will be asked to appear in person for biometric capture: fingerprints, photograph and signature. This happens at the immigration headquarters in Kampala, at regional immigration offices or at designated missions abroad. Carry your original documents and receipts.

7. Track your application

Use your application reference to track progress online. You may receive an SMS or email when the passport is ready.

8. Collect your passport

Collect the passport in person at the office you selected, with your identification. Check that all details are correct before you leave.

How long does it take?

Processing time varies with demand, the completeness of your documents and the office you apply through. Apply well in advance, ideally several months before you need to travel, especially before peak seasons such as the end of year holidays and university intake periods. Express processing may be available for an extra fee.

Renewing a Ugandan passport

Renew when your passport is close to expiring or running out of pages. Many countries require at least six months of validity left on your passport for entry, so do not wait until the last month. The renewal process follows the same online steps, with your old passport as a key document.

Lost or stolen passports

Report a lost passport to the police immediately and get a police letter. Then apply for a replacement through the online system. If you lose your passport abroad, contact the nearest Ugandan embassy or high commission.

Tips to avoid delays

  • Make sure your names match across your National ID, birth certificate and application
  • Correct any errors on your National ID with NIRA before applying
  • Use clear scans and follow photo specifications exactly
  • Keep copies of every receipt and reference number
  • Use only official channels and never pay unofficial "facilitation"
  • Apply early, especially if you also need a visa

After the passport: visas

A passport lets you leave and re-enter Uganda, but most destinations also require a visa. Ugandans can travel within the East African Community with fewer restrictions, while countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, Schengen states and the UAE have their own visa processes. Check the embassy requirements early, as visa appointments can take weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone else collect my passport?

Passports are generally collected in person. Check current DCIC rules if you have special circumstances.

How much does a Uganda passport cost?

DCIC currently lists UGX 250,000 for an ordinary passport, plus UGX 150,000 for express processing. Fees can change, so confirm on the official portal before paying.
