How to Apply for a National ID in Uganda for the First Time (NIRA)

The National ID and National Identification Number (NIN) are needed for almost everything in Uganda: SIM registration, bank accounts, jobs, passports, and now even taxes, since your NIN serves as your TIN. Here is how to register for the first time.

Who should register

All Ugandan citizens aged 16 and above can apply for a National ID card. Children under 16 can be registered to get a NIN. Foreign residents get an Alien ID from the immigration directorate.

Documents to carry

  • Birth certificate, if available
  • Parents' national IDs or NINs
  • Recommendation letter from LC1 and sometimes the sub county
  • Academic documents or baptism card can support your details
  • Any previous ID documents

Step by step

  1. Get and fill the NIRA registration form (Form 3 for citizens aged 16 and above), available at NIRA offices or online.
  2. Take the form and documents to the NIRA district office or a registration centre near you.
  3. Your details are verified, then your photo, fingerprints and signature are captured.
  4. You receive an acknowledgement slip. Keep it safe.
  5. Check status and collect your card when ready.

Checking your status

NIRA provides SMS and online options to check status. Follow official NIRA channels and avoid agents who ask for money for "fast tracking".

Tips

  • Make sure names match your academic documents exactly
  • Double check date of birth before you sign
  • Keep a photocopy of the acknowledgement slip
