How to Buy Shares on the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE)

The Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) lets ordinary Ugandans buy shares in listed companies such as banks, telecoms, energy and manufacturing firms. Owning shares can give you dividends and long term growth.

How the stock market works

When you buy a share, you own a small part of a company. You can earn from dividends, the profit companies pay out, and from capital gains when share prices rise. Prices can also fall, so invest money you can leave for years.

Step 1: Choose a licensed broker

Only licensed stockbrokers and dealers can trade on the USE. Check the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) list of licensed firms before you pay anyone.

Step 2: Open a CDS account

Your shares are held electronically in a Central Depository System (CDS) account. Your broker helps you open it using your national ID or passport, photos, contact details and bank details for dividend payments.

Step 3: Fund your account and place an order

Send money to your broker and tell them which company, how many shares and your price limit. The broker places the order on the exchange.

Step 4: Track and receive dividends

Check your CDS statement and company announcements. Dividends are paid to your bank or mobile money account after the company declares them.

Costs to expect

Brokerage commission and small regulatory fees apply per transaction. Dividends are subject to withholding tax.

Tips for beginners

  • Read annual reports and dividend history
  • Diversify across sectors
  • Think long term
  • Consider unit trusts if you prefer professional management
