People change their names for many reasons: marriage, religion, correcting errors or simply preference. In Uganda, the formal way to change a name is through a deed poll.
What is a deed poll?
A deed poll is a legal document in which you declare that you have abandoned your former name and adopted a new one. It is signed before a commissioner for oaths or a lawyer.
Step by step
- Prepare the deed poll with a lawyer, stating your old and new names.
- Sign and commission it.
- Register the deed poll with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) and pay the fees.
- Publish in the Uganda Gazette so the change is public.
- Update your documents: national ID with NIRA, passport, bank accounts, NSSF, URA and academic institutions.
Minor corrections
If it is just a spelling mistake on a national ID, NIRA has a change of particulars process with supporting documents. A deed poll may still be requested for bigger changes.
Marriage and names
A woman may use her husband's surname after marriage, typically supported by a marriage certificate. A deed poll can make the change clearer for some institutions.
Tips
- Keep certified copies of the deed poll and gazette
- Update UNEB records early if you are a student
- Use a lawyer to avoid delays
