How to Get a Birth Certificate in Uganda: Short and Full Certificates

A birth certificate proves a child's identity, age and nationality. It is needed for school registration, passports, national ID, inheritance and much more. In Uganda, birth registration is handled by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).

Short birth certificate vs full birth certificate

A short birth certificate (notification) is often issued at the hospital or registration point. The full birth certificate is the official long form document from NIRA. Passports and some foreign institutions require the full certificate.

Registering a newborn

  1. Notify the birth at the hospital, health centre or local registration point.
  2. Provide parents' national IDs or NINs and details of the child.
  3. Receive the short certificate or notification.
  4. Apply to NIRA for the full certificate and pay the prescribed fee.

Late registration

If a birth was not registered on time, you can still apply. You will usually need supporting documents such as baptism cards, immunisation cards, school records, a letter from the LC1 and parents' IDs. Adults sometimes need a statutory declaration.

Correcting errors

Spelling mistakes and wrong dates can be corrected through NIRA with supporting evidence. Fix them early, especially before applying for a passport.

Tips

  • Use the same spelling of names on all documents
  • Keep certified copies in a safe place
  • Apply through official NIRA offices and portals only
