Many government payments in Uganda, from income tax to permit fees, require a Payment Registration Number (PRN) generated through the Uganda Revenue Authority system. Here is how it works.
What is a PRN?
A PRN is a unique reference number for a specific payment. It tells URA who is paying, for what and how much. Each PRN has an expiry date.
How to generate a PRN
- Go to the URA web portal.
- Choose the payment registration option.
- Select the tax head or fee type, such as income tax, rental tax, stamp duty or a government service fee.
- Enter your TIN or NIN and the amount.
- Submit and print or save the PRN slip.
Ways to pay
- At any URA partner bank branch
- Through mobile banking and internet banking
- Through mobile money where supported
- At bank agents
Confirm your payment
After paying, check the PRN status on the URA portal and keep the receipt. Use it as proof when filing returns or collecting services.
Common mistakes
- Paying after the PRN has expired
- Choosing the wrong tax head
- Paying a different amount from the PRN
Do I need a TIN?
Individuals can now use their NIN as their TIN. Businesses and companies use their business TIN.
