Many applicants send a generic cover letter or none at all. A focused, one page cover letter shows the employer you care about this specific job.
Cover letter structure
- Header: your name, phone, email, date and the employer's details.
- Greeting: address a named person if possible.
- Opening paragraph: the job you are applying for and a strong reason you fit.
- Middle paragraphs: two or three achievements that match the job requirements.
- Closing: restate interest, mention availability for interview and thank them.
Sample cover letter
Dear Ms Namuli,
I am applying for the Marketing Officer position advertised on your website. With three years of experience growing social media audiences for consumer brands, I am confident I can help your company reach more customers across Uganda.
At my current company, I grew our Instagram following by 150 percent in one year and launched a WhatsApp ordering campaign that increased monthly sales. I also coordinated two product launches, working with designers, distributors and media partners.
I admire your commitment to quality local products and would love to contribute to your next stage of growth. I am available for an interview at your convenience.
Yours sincerely,
Sarah Akello
