Maize Farming in Uganda: How to Get More Bags Per Acre

Maize is Uganda's most widely grown cereal and an important export to Kenya, South Sudan and the region. With good practices, farmers can multiply yields.

Seed choice

Hybrid and improved open pollinated seed from certified dealers gives much higher yields than recycled grain. Check for the certification label.

Spacing

A common recommendation is 75 cm between rows and 30 cm between plants, one seed per hole, or 60 cm with two seeds thinned to one.

Fertilizer

Apply DAP or manure at planting and top dress with urea or CAN when maize is knee high. A soil test helps target nutrients.

Fall armyworm

Scout fields weekly, look for ragged leaves and sawdust like droppings in the funnel, and spray early with recommended products.

Post harvest

  • Harvest when husks are dry and grains hard
  • Dry on tarpaulins, not bare ground, to avoid aflatoxins
  • Store in hermetic bags or clean stores

Marketing

Sell through farmer groups or warehouse receipt systems to get better prices than at harvest time.
