Onion Farming in Uganda: A Profitable Crop With Strong Demand

Onions are used in almost every Ugandan meal, and a large share are brought in from neighbouring countries. That gap is an opportunity for local farmers.

Varieties

Red Creole and hybrid red onions such as Red Bombay and Jambar F1 are popular for their pungency and storage life.

Nursery and transplanting

Raise seedlings in a nursery for six to eight weeks, then transplant at about 10 cm between plants and 30 cm between rows.

Water and fertilizer

Onions need regular water, especially at bulbing. Drip irrigation saves water. Apply manure and balanced fertilizer, then reduce watering near maturity.

Pests and diseases

Thrips, downy mildew and purple blotch are common. Scout often and use recommended controls.

Curing and storage

Harvest when tops fall over, cure in the shade for one to two weeks, then store in a dry, airy place. Well cured onions sell later at better prices.
