Photography and Videography Consultations: Planning Your Brand Shoot

The best brand photography and video comes from a clear brief agreed before anyone picks up a camera. Yet many Ugandan businesses book a photographer, turn up on the day and hope for the best. The result is often photos that look nice but do not fit the website, social media or ads they were meant for, followed by a costly reshoot.

A short consultation with a photographer or videographer before the shoot day prevents most of these expensive mistakes. This guide explains how to plan a brand shoot, what to agree in advance and how to get images and videos that actually work for your business.

Start with where the content will be used

Before thinking about poses and props, list every place the content will appear: website banners, product pages, Instagram feed, TikTok and Reels, LinkedIn, brochures, billboards, menus or pitch decks. Each needs different formats:

  • Website banners need wide landscape images with space for text
  • Instagram and TikTok need vertical photos and videos
  • Print needs high resolution files
  • Team pages need consistent headshots on matching backgrounds

Telling your photographer this upfront means they shoot in the right orientations from the start.

Bring references, not adjectives

Words like "clean", "modern" and "vibrant" mean different things to different people. Three example images convey a look faster than a paragraph of description. Collect references from brands you admire, Pinterest boards or previous shoots, and explain what you like about each: the light, the colours, the mood or the composition.

Agree on deliverables up front

Confirm the number of final images or the video length and format before the shoot, not after. Your agreement should cover:

  • Number of edited photos and the level of retouching
  • Video length, aspect ratios and whether captions or music are included
  • Raw files, if you want them
  • Delivery timeline for previews and finals
  • Usage rights: where and for how long you can use the content
  • Price, deposit and payment schedule

Use the consultation to scout constraints

Lighting, location permissions and available time are easier to fix in a planning call than on the day itself. Discuss:

  • Location: your office, shop, factory, a studio or outdoor locations around Kampala or upcountry. Some public places, malls and private estates require permission to shoot.
  • Light: Uganda's midday sun is harsh. Early morning and late afternoon give softer light for outdoor shoots.
  • Weather: plan a backup for rainy seasons.
  • Power: confirm power availability for lights and charging, and plan for outages.
  • Drones: aerial shots may need permissions, so ask your photographer what applies.

Build a shot list

A shot list is a simple table of every image or clip you need, grouped by location. For example: founder portrait, team at work, product close ups, customers being served, exterior of the building, behind the scenes clips. It keeps the day focused and ensures nothing important is forgotten.

Prepare your people and space

  • Agree on wardrobe: brand colours, no busy patterns, ironed clothes
  • Tidy and declutter shooting areas
  • Get written consent from staff and customers who appear in images
  • Prepare products: clean, labelled and in perfect condition
  • Schedule people so they are not waiting around for hours

Budget realistically

Brand shoot costs depend on hours, crew size, locations, equipment, editing and usage. Ask for an itemised quote. A half day well planned shoot often delivers more usable content than a full day without a plan. Our guide on how consultants price their time explains common pricing models.

On the day

  • Have one decision maker present to approve shots
  • Review a few images on a laptop early to check the look
  • Stick to the shot list, but leave room for spontaneous moments
  • Capture extra vertical video for social media

After the shoot

Select images promptly so editing is not delayed. Organise files into folders by use, keep backups, and create a simple guide for your team on which images to use where. Good brand content can serve you for a year or more.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a brand shoot be?

It depends on the shot list. Many small businesses get strong results from a half day shoot with good planning.

Should we hire a photographer and videographer separately?

A team that does both can coordinate better. If you hire separately, make sure they plan together.

Can we shoot with smartphones?

Smartphones work for everyday social content. See our smartphone product photography guide. For your website, ads and campaigns, a professional shoot is worth it.
