Tomato Farming in Uganda: Varieties, Spacing, Diseases and Profit

Tomatoes are eaten in almost every Ugandan home, which makes them one of the most profitable short season crops. They are also demanding: diseases and price swings can wipe out profits. Here is how to farm tomatoes well.

Popular varieties

  • Hybrid varieties such as Anna F1, Kilele F1 and Assila F1 for high yield and long shelf life
  • Open pollinated varieties such as Money Maker and Heinz for lower seed cost

Buy certified seed from reputable agro dealers.

Nursery and transplanting

Raise seedlings in a raised nursery bed or trays. Transplant after four to six weeks, when seedlings have four to six true leaves. Transplant in the evening and water well.

Spacing and staking

A common spacing is about 60 cm between plants and 90 cm between rows. Stake or trellis the plants and prune side shoots for bigger, cleaner fruits.

Fertilizer and water

Add well rotted manure before planting. Use a balanced fertilizer at planting and top dress during flowering and fruiting. Drip irrigation saves water and reduces leaf diseases.

Diseases and pests

  • Late blight: the biggest threat in rainy seasons. Use preventive fungicides and avoid wetting leaves.
  • Bacterial wilt: rotate crops and avoid planting after potatoes, eggplants or peppers.
  • Tuta absoluta and whiteflies: use traps, scouting and approved pesticides.

Always follow pre harvest intervals on chemical labels.

Timing the market

Prices in Kampala markets often rise when the rainy season makes tomato farming difficult. Many experienced farmers use irrigation or greenhouses to harvest when supply is low.
