Typhoid Fever in Uganda: Symptoms, Testing, Treatment and Prevention

Typhoid fever is caused by the bacteria Salmonella Typhi, spread through contaminated food and water. It is common in parts of Uganda, especially where clean water and sanitation are limited.

Symptoms

  • Fever that rises gradually over several days
  • Headache and body weakness
  • Stomach pain, constipation or diarrhoea
  • Loss of appetite
  • In some people, a faint rash

Getting tested correctly

Many clinics use the Widal test, but it often gives false positives, leading to unnecessary antibiotics. A blood culture or stool culture is more accurate. Ask your health worker about the best test available.

Treatment

Typhoid is treated with antibiotics prescribed by a health worker. Drug resistant typhoid is a growing concern, which is why self medication is dangerous. Rest, drink fluids and finish the full course of treatment.

Complications

Without proper treatment, typhoid can cause intestinal bleeding or perforation, which are emergencies.

Prevention

  • Drink boiled or treated water
  • Wash hands with soap after using the toilet and before eating
  • Eat food that is freshly cooked and hot
  • Wash fruits and vegetables with clean water
  • Ask about the typhoid conjugate vaccine
