Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) in Women: Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention

A urinary tract infection (UTI) happens when bacteria enter and multiply in the urinary system. Women get UTIs more often than men because of a shorter urethra.

Symptoms

  • Burning or pain when passing urine
  • Frequent, urgent need to urinate
  • Cloudy or strong smelling urine
  • Lower abdominal discomfort
  • Blood in urine

When it is serious

Fever, chills, back or side pain, nausea and vomiting may mean the infection has reached the kidneys. Seek care immediately. UTIs in pregnancy also need prompt treatment.

Testing and treatment

A urinalysis and, if needed, a urine culture help identify the infection and the right antibiotic. Avoid buying antibiotics without a test; misuse drives antibiotic resistance, which is already a problem in Uganda.

Prevention

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Do not hold urine for long
  • Wipe from front to back
  • Pass urine after sex
  • Wear breathable cotton underwear
  • Avoid harsh soaps and douching

Repeat infections

If you get UTIs often, see a doctor to check for underlying causes such as diabetes or structural problems.
