Yaka Prepaid Electricity in Uganda: How to Buy Tokens and Fix Common Problems

Most homes and businesses in Uganda use Yaka prepaid meters. You buy units before you use them, which helps control spending. Here is how to make the most of yours.

How to buy Yaka

  • Mobile money: MTN MoMo and Airtel Money menus include a Yaka or electricity bill payment option. Enter your meter number and amount.
  • Bank apps and agents: many banks support Yaka purchases.
  • Authorised vendors and supermarkets.

You receive a 20 digit token by SMS.

How to load tokens

Type the token on the meter keypad, then press Enter (or the blue button on many meters). The display confirms and shows your new balance.

Why do I get fewer units some months?

Uganda uses a lifeline tariff for low consumption domestic customers, while higher usage is charged at standard rates. A service charge may also apply. Check the current tariff from the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA).

Common problems

  • Token rejected: check the meter number and retype carefully.
  • Token already used: confirm whether it was loaded before.
  • No SMS: retrieve the token from your mobile money transaction history or contact the provider.
  • Meter shows an error: contact your electricity distributor's customer care.

Save electricity

  • Switch to LED bulbs
  • Unplug idle appliances
  • Use flasks to keep water hot
  • Service fridges and replace old seals
